Eye Abscess

WARNING! THIS POST CONTAINS A GRAPHIC PICTURE OF A GUINEA PIG WITH AN ABSCESS BEHIND THE EYE, BEFORE REMOVAL, DO NOT VIEW IF YOU ARE OF A SENSITIVE NATURE!

This guinea pig suddenly presented with the eye as shown below one weekend. He was immediately rushed to the emergency vet who gave treatment until the next day when his own vet was able to operate and remove the eye. Although experienced in the ‘field’ of eyes the vet had ‘only’ done ten guinea pig eye removals (probably more than most), however it was fast becoming a do or die situation and the eye was removed- along with 4ml of pus (that’s 4x 1ml syringe fulls!) from the abscess behind it. Treatment involved a long course of antibiotics and therefore probiotics as well as daily flushing of the abscess, without the flushing the treatment was not likely to have been a success. This guinea pig went on to live another 2 years with one eye and no problems from it.

Eye removal should only be considered as a last option and not where a simple eye poke injury has occured, however speed is of the essence where an abscess is present and just giving Antibiotics will not help. The Optic nerve is attached to the brain and no unnecessary chances should be taken with eyes.
